Today is Smile Power Day.
I’m not sure who invented it or why it falls on June 15th, but here’s what I was able to uncover in some brief research: Smile Power Day appears to be an unofficial modern observance centered on the emotional and social benefits of smiling, though its exact creator and origin remain unclear. The holiday’s popularity likely grew alongside the broader smiley-face and positivity movement that took off in the late 20th century.
Regardless of who invented it or why, there’s little argument that a smile is a good thing. It makes you feel good, and it often causes others to smile right back. If there is such a thing as a “good contagion,” a smile might be one of the best things we can pass along to others.
Building relationships makes me smile. Solving problems almost always generates a smile. And having fun is sort of the “chicken vs egg” argument in real life; which one causes which?
“Everyone smiles in the same language.” ~ George Carlin
“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.” ~ Mother Teresa
…and perhaps one of my favorite reminders from the lyrics of The Grateful Dead:
“Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.”
“He’s Gone”
Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia
Have a great week ahead. Keep building relationships, solving problems, and having fun.
Your smile may be exactly what someone else needs today.
