I was pulling into the driveway the other day when a great song came on the radio. It was one I hadn’t heard in a while, but as soon as I heard the first note, I locked in and found myself singing along with every lyric.
I pulled into the garage but didn’t even consider getting out of the car. I simply put the car in park, left the engine running, and listened to the song. I can’t remember what memories came rushing back, but I’m sure there were plenty.
Songs can remind you of people, places, and memorable moments from your past. The lyrics emerge from some dark recess of your mind to the tip of your tongue as you sing along like you were a backup singer in the band.
I used to do this all the time. Listen to the song’s end before leaving the car. Long before we had Spotify, Pandora, or Apple Music, we waited.
And we enjoyed the moment.
Now, we know we can get the song whenever and wherever we want. At our fingertips. On demand.
The same thing could happen to you this week, but it might not be a song that comes on the radio. It might just be a name that you think of. A voice you can hear in your head. A location you drive past that starts the music in your mind.
“Oh yeah, I know this one.”
Sure, you could get to it later. Make a mental note. Add it to tomorrow’s to-do list. Tell yourself you’ll reach out when you have more time.
But why wait?
Or maybe, you realize that “top of mind” works both ways.
Sure, we love it when people have our names at the top of their minds, but what about our “top of mind”? Perhaps that person’s name popped up when it did, where it did, and why it did for a reason.
Make the call. Send the text. Write the note. Stop by to say with all honesty, “I was just thinking about you.”
Sometimes songs, like people, start playing just when we need them.
Park the car and sing along.
