“I’m growing older but not up
Jimmy Buffett
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
So let those winds of change blow over my head
I’d rather die while I’m living than live while I’m dead”
Today is my 59th birthday.
I’m okay with bad knees as long as I’m still needed. I’d rather have a bad meniscus or two than feel too minuscule.
I’m okay wearing readers for my fading eyesight, as long as I still have strong vision and can keep seeing the opportunities and good people in front of me.
I might feel my age in my hips, but I still feel pretty hip for my age.
My shoulders might not be as strong as they were when I was younger, but I can still lift people up every chance I get.
My ears are definitely aging, but they remind me how important it is to listen to people and hear what they’re saying. Sometimes it’s their words. Other times, it’s their actions.
My feet might get a little tired at the end of the day, but I still feel like I can walk the walk.
The good news? I don’t feel a day over 60. Heck, I barely feel a day over 58!
This year, my birthday presents will be the same birthday presence I try to unwrap every year: building relationships, solving problems, and having fun.
As the late Toby Keith said, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”
Time to have my cake…and eat it too.
