It’s what you signed up for, but some days you ask yourself, “Did I sign up for this?

There is “No Experience Required” to start the job, but it sure would help if you had some previous experience. The good news is that every opportunity you get after your first day on the job helps you gain knowledge, confidence, and competence.

You sometimes watch others doing the job and think they have it easier than you, or wonder why it doesn’t seem as difficult for some people. But if you look around, you’ll see others looking at you and wondering how you’re so calm and making everything seem under control.

Finding a mentor is a good idea. Learning from others who have been there and done that always seems to help.

You can read books, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and even attend classes, but it’s just not the same as getting out there and learning how to do it yourself. Hands on. In person.

There will be lots of laughter. Some amazement. Some wonder. Some moments when you’re not sure what to do next. Probably some embarrassment, and almost certainly some tears. There will also be lots of excitement, enthusiasm, and some moments that will make you very proud of yourself.

You probably won’t be alone in anything you do, but much of the responsibility will rest squarely on your shoulders. There is nowhere to hide from the responsibility.

You hope the people you’re responsible for will listen to you, heed your advice, and ask questions along the way. Sometimes they will. Sometimes they won’t.

You would love to have their respect, but you should never expect it. You must earn it every day.

Some days you’ll wonder if you’re doing it right at all.

You gotta get up, show up, and do the work. You must build relationships, solve problems, and have fun.

If you can do that, sometimes they’ll call you their Realtor.

Sometimes they’ll call you their father.

P.S. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend, whether you were being celebrated, celebrating, or remembering someone special.
