June 2nd has a pretty cool history of great starts.
On this date in 1925, Lou Gehrig replaced Wally Pipp in the Yankees lineup. Gehrig went on to start 2,130 consecutive games, earning the nickname The Iron Man. That record stood until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995.
June 2, 1953 ~ A 27-year-old Elizabeth Windsor was formally crowned during her coronation ceremony. Although she had ascended to the throne 16 months earlier, her reign would last more than 70 years, the longest in British history.
And on June 2, 2004, a computer programmer from Washington named Ken Jennings made his debut on Jeopardy! He went on to win 74 straight games and over $4.5 million. Today, he’s the host of the show.
