I spent the weekend playing golf with friends at a beautiful resort in the Tampa area. The weather was exactly what you’d expect in early June in Florida: hot, hazy, and humid.
During our final round, a resort staff member drove up to check on the pace of play. That’s standard practice to make sure things are moving along. Nothing ruins a good round faster than slow play… well, maybe bad putting.
I was playing well and enjoying the day when the staffer rolled up with some casual small talk. But as he drove off, he tossed out a question that stuck with me:
“Any complaints?”
Not “How’s your round?” or “Enjoying the course?” Just straight to complaints. As we waited on the next tee box, I asked the guys I was playing with if they thought that was odd. They all agreed. It felt like he was inviting us to focus on what was wrong instead of what was right.
And it got me thinking…
What are you looking for?
Each day, we get to choose our mindset, our focus, and our energy. You can look for the negative, and it won’t take long to find it. Or you can choose to look for something better: a smile, a kind word, a small win. It’s one of the reasons I start my day by asking myself, “Is today going to be a great day…or a great day?”
This week, be intentional. Look for the good. Be the person who notices what’s right.
And if someone asks, “Any complaints?” try smiling and saying, “None worth mentioning.”
