Burning-Match -derek-GaveyMonday Morning Match is a quick post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.

I played golf twice this weekend.

I also watched each round of The Masters, including today’s final round where Bubba Watson earned his second green jacket.

There was a big difference in the level of play between my course in Columbus and the skill levels demonstrated by the professionals at Augusta National. There was also a huge difference in the importance, pressure and spectacle.

In Augusta, those players were playing golf because that is what they do for a living. They are professional golfers. I was playing with my daughter and my brother for recreation, exercise and bragging rights. You know…the way brothers do.

While I will never have the opportunity to compete with Bubba Watson, there is a lot I can learn from him and his fellow players we see on television. Belief, determination, poise, concentration, creativity, persistence and humility are just a few of the lessons I saw as I watched the best players in the world try to claim the seasons first major on the PGA Tour.

No matter what business you’re in and what level of competition you are playing against, those same characteristics might just be what you need to rise to the top of your game.

Bubba Watson came into the week truly believing he had what it takes to win The Masters, mainly because he has done it before. Just think of all the things you have done successfully in the past that if you can do them again, you’ll have a chance at something great too.

Start by building relationships, solving problems and having fun.

Once you believe in yourself, those things start to come naturally. Then just take life one shot at a time…like Bubba did.
